A Personal Update From Instructor Az Miralay

Club Update 15th May

Dear Students/Parents,

I normally try to write updates and messages from WMA, in an effort to maintain professionalism in my business. However, today I feel it is only right to talk to you personally. At the time of writing, we are moving into week 9 of the UK Lockdown. Last weekend we received an update from Government laying out plans for re-opening the country.

Based on the information provided, it looks like businesses like ours will be the last to resume regular services. In regards to the safety of the country and support of our NHS, I not only completely understand this, but also support it. But I would be lying if I said that as a business-man, who’s sole income comes from teaching Martial Arts, this fills me with a level of dread.

We have taken the initiative and begun online classes. Teaching via Zoom and Facebook Live since week one of lockdown. It has been great to see so many students adapting with us, training in their kitchens, living rooms and gardens. Parents, I commend you for holding pads for them, and pushing them back in front of the camera when they say they don’t want to do it anymore. Adult students, you have been amazing, thanks for all your messages complimenting the quality of the classes I am trying my best to provide.

What I will say, is that the only person who probably hates training online more than you, is me. I fully understand that Martial Arts is something that works best in a physical space where proper instruction can be given. This situation we find ourselves in right now is very much like placing a band-aid on a large wound. However, adaptation is necessary, and I think exercise and the maintenance of a routine is paramount in helping everyones physical and mental health.

Many of you have had to suspend membership, due to Covid-19 also effecting your home, family and income. Others simply haven’t been able to get on board with the online sessions. As I’ve said many times before, and in individual messages to any of you that have kindly let me know. I completely understand. This is effecting us all in different ways, and I won’t sit here and pretend like your Kickboxing Classes are an essential out going right now. Please do not worry, and please know, we will welcome you back with open arms when all this is over.

To those that have managed to continue paying, regardless of if you have taken to the online training. It has literally made it possible for me to continue paying my mortgage and personal bills. I am of course aware of Government support, but not needing to rely on it at this stage has given a lot of relief to myself and my family. I cannot thank you enough, and will endeavour to do my best to repay you in any way I can moving forward.

Later today I will send a message from Warrior MA, detailing all the updates of what’s available to students. Including holding an Online Grading for Colour Belts, and Advanced Grading Assessment for Brown and Above online. We are also planning on safely delivering all of your belts from the last grading by hand over the next few weeks.

Above all that I have said today, I hope you are well. I hope your family is safe. I hope you are getting through this together. Thank you for reading to the end, and I hope to see you all very soon.
